The Story
Martin's journey into senior outdoor activities didn't follow a straight path. Back in 2008, he was working as a fitness instructor at a wellness center in Břeclav, teaching general exercise classes. Nothing extraordinary. But one afternoon changed everything — he noticed an older client, someone who'd been struggling with low energy and motivation, completely transform after just one guided walk through nearby nature trails. That moment stuck with him.
He couldn't shake the feeling that there was something special about combining outdoor activity with the specific needs of older adults. So he pursued formal education in the subject. Martin completed his degree in Physical Education and Recreation Management at Masaryk University in Brno, with a focus on gerontology and adapted physical activities. Not just theory — he wanted real understanding of how aging affects fitness, balance, and the ability to enjoy the outdoors safely.
Over the past 16 years, Martin's built something remarkable. He's led more than 2,400 guided hiking expeditions through the Pálava hills and surrounding vineyard regions — that's real, hands-on experience with hundreds of different people, each with their own health considerations, fitness levels, and goals. He knows these trails intimately: which paths work for someone recovering from surgery, which routes reward you with the best views, where the terrain gets tricky, how weather changes throughout the seasons.
His approach — combining practical trail knowledge with evidence-based practices in senior wellness — has influenced hiking program development at over a dozen senior centers and wellness facilities across the South Moravian region. He's not just writing about how older adults should exercise. He's actually spent thousands of hours helping them do it, adjusting pace for someone with arthritis, celebrating when someone reaches a summit they thought was impossible, preventing injuries before they happen.
